Dear HSCP Members,

I hope you all enjoyed the summer and had the opportunity to spend valuable time with your families. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the Society this year and welcome back all members. I would like to thank our officers and administrative staff for their effort, which enables us to fulfill the mission of the Society.

By way of introduction, I moved to Houston in 1989 to complete my training at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in 1992 and my fellowship in Anatomic Pathology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in 1993. During my 22 years of pathology work in Houston, I have had the opportunity to spend some years in academic practice and some years in private practice. Currently, I practice pathology in north Houston. I respect the past because I have learned valuable lessons through my different experiences, but I am convinced that we can shape the future to be better every day.

This year, Dr. Contreras has prepared a series of very interesting conferences. Our first scientific meeting this year, “Did You Miss the HIPAA Omnibus? Protecting Patient Privacy and Patient Safety,” was conducted by Ms. Sarah Fontenot, BSN, JD on September 16. It was very well attended and the food was great. Our next meeting, scheduled for October 21, “Use of immunohistochemistry and newer techniques in the diagnosis of melanocytic lesions” will be presented by Professor Dr. Victor G. Prieto, MD, PHD.  Please refer to the website and our newsletter for a complete calendar of meetings and locations. We are planning to have some of the meetings at different restaurants and venues in the Houston area; only a few are going to be at the usual place (Trevisio).

Our Holiday party has been scheduled for December 2.  It will be a great opportunity to enjoy time with friends and to meet pathologists from around the area. As we have done in previous years, we will request a small contribution to help cover the expenses. Contributions towards beverages for the evening will also be greatly appreciated.

Dr. Sahin is organizing our HSCP Spring Seminar on Breast Pathology, which is scheduled for April 16, 2016. The seminar will take place at the St. Regis Hotel. Please save this date!

We are excited to kick-off two new initiatives. First, we will begin a “Legendary Pathologists” celebration. This tribute will honor a pathologist for his or her passion for pathology, successful career, and many contributions to the field. This year, we commemorate Professor Dr. Mario Armando Luna. Second, we will have our first fund raising activity, “Meet the Pathologist Before You Need One.” The event will be held on October 30. Please find additional details and an invitation for the event on our website. Make plans for a fun evening in support of the Society.

Lastly, I encourage every pathologist and future pathologist in the Houston–Galveston area to join the Society and participate in the many activities we have planned.
